The Trip Down (12-13 July 2000).

Our route from Millbrook to Key West took us down US 231 to I-10 near Panama City, FL.  Then we would take I-10 to the end in Jacksonville, FL.  From there we would take A1A (the coast highway) whenever possible, US-1, and (where absolutely necessary around Miami) I-95.

The road along the Atlantic Coast of Florida is quite beautiful. You only see the ocean in a few areas. Mostly, you seem to see vegatation, but when you look closer, you see the mansions behind them. You also see summer rentals and fishing camps. Sometimes all three within 1 mile of each other.

Thanks to my boss, Malcolm, we picked up "Traveler," which is one of those free coupon books at the rest stops, restaurants, and gas stations in every state.  We planned to spend the first night somewhere around Melbourne, FL.  Checking the discounted hotels in the Melbourne area, we found several on the beach with good rates.  The first picture is the view from our room, the second is another view from the elevator.  The hotel was a Holiday Inn.  How much?  $49/night.  When we registered for the night, they told us that rate would apply for as long as we wanted to stay (even a week or more!).

Next Day.
